U.S. special operations forces conducted a raid that successfully killed ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on Saturday night,according to multiple media reports.Newsweek was the first to report news of the operation.

Unnamed military officials told both Newsweek and Fox News that a "high value ISIS target" believed to be the elusive ISIS chiefwas killed in an operation in Syria's Idlib province.Members of Joint Special Operations Command team carried out the operation "after receiving actionable intelligence," Newsweek reports.

Officials are reportedly still working to confirm that thehigh value ISIS target was indeed al-Baghdadi, who is believed to havedetonated a suicide vest during the raid, killing himself, multiple sourcestold Defense One.

Previously believed killed in a Russian air strike in May2017, ISIS's media network in April published a video message purporting tocome from al-Baghdadi and marking his first public appearance since declaringthe jihadists' now-defunct "caliphate" in 2014.

The raid was reportedly ordered by President Donald Trump,who tweeted on Saturday that "something very big has happened."

Shortly after Trump's message, the White House announced that Trump would make a "major" public statement at 9 am on Sunday morning.
